Course Description

This honors course strengthens communication skills developed in Japanese III by engaging students in a critical and in-depth exploration of contemporary and traditional Japanese society. The curriculum is structured around significant cultural themes that drive both linguistic mastery and cultural literacy: Arts and Aesthetics: Developing sophisticated descriptive language by mastering the form and seasonal symbolism of Haiku poetry and analyzing the global narrative impact
of anime and manga.  Historical Context and Memory: Engaging with pivotal historical narratives to understand the foundational events and legacies that continue to shape modern Japan. Contemporary Lifestyles and Community: Analyzing diverse lifestyles—from daily routines and consumer habits to communal norms—to grasp the intricate workings of modern Japanese society. Nature and Environmental Stewardship: Exploring the profound influence of nature on Japanese culture, philosophy, and disaster preparedness, alongside modern practices of environmental stewardship.
